Being a female breadwinner is a powerful role that can make you feel both proud and simultaneously drowning in responsibility.
Navigating the demands of financial stability, caretaking, and work-life balance can be overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to seamlessly juggle it all while maintaining a facade of having it all together.
Here’s how you can navigate this responsibility with confidence and care:
1. Prioritize Self-Care: I learned this the hard way. While supporting my family through their teenage years and college, I faced a health crisis that forced me to take time off. This experience taught me the crucial lesson of putting myself first. Regular self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for sustaining your ability to care for others and manage your responsibilities.
2. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Aligning your values with your calendar, ensures there is time for you, your family, and your work. Some months will be overwhelmed with work appointments and others with family appointments. However, make sure you block time for you to unplug, rest and renew. Scheduling regular time throughout the year for you and your family will guarantee you are investing your time, energy and money in the things that matter most.
3. Resource Yourself: Make it a priority to delegate and seek support. You are not alone and you don’t have to do it all alone. Delegate tasks at work and home where possible, and don’t hesitate to seek support from your network, whether it’s family, friends, or professional help. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
4. Communicate Openly: Self leadership and honest communication with you about what you need and the best way to get those needs met is one of the best ways to take care of yourself and others. Then share your challenges and needs with your family and colleagues. Honest communication can foster understanding and support, and it helps manage expectations and reduce the pressure you might feel to “have it all together.”
Remember, your worth is not defined by your ability to handle everything flawlessly; it’s defined by your resilience, your love, and your ability to balance your responsibilities while caring for yourself.
